I had the good fortune to spend a bracing winter's day at Suomenlinna, a rocky bastion fortress in the Gulf of Finland (built in the "star" layout/style of Vauban, a renowned French military engineer of the time) composed of eight islands (six of which have been fortified) approximately 4 kilometers southeast of the capital city center of Helsinki. Popular with locals and tourists alike as a picturesque picnic site and day trip destination, it was originally known as Sveaborg (Castle of the Swedes) or Viapori in the Finnish language and renamed Suomenlinna (Castle of Finland) in 1918 per patriotic and nationalistic sentiments. The site became a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991.

On TUE 03 May 1808, during the Finnish War, Sweden surrendered the fortress to Russia, paving the way for the occupation of Finland by Russian forces in 1809, and the subsequent establishment of Grand Duchy of Finland (at the conclusion of the war). The islands were used as a base for the Russian Baltic Fleet during World War I - until Finland declared its full independence on THU 06 December 1917. Finland's Defense Department managed Suomenlinna until its transition to civilian control in 1973.

Numerous photos may be found here (images #34 through #57 of the collection). I do hope you will enjoy them!
